ABOUT GIS UNIT

The MFLR GIS Unit was established in 2011 by consolidated the existing GIS sections from the Department of Range Resources Management and the Department of Soil and Water Conservation. The Unit is located at the head office of the MFLR under the Department of Administration.

Mission


The Mission of the MFLR GIS Unit is to provide geospatial information to MFLR staff as well as the academia, industry and the public.

Goals

  • To maintain comprehensive and useful Forest and Rangeland inventory of all Forests and Rangelands in Lesotho
  • To provide highly available and useful geospatial information on Forests, rangelands, and Soil and Water Conservation activities
  • Integration of GIS with existing and planned information systems
  • To foster the values and benefits of GIS technology to ensure good stewardship of government resources
  • To work cooperatively with other Government ministries and departments, and non-government agencies
  • To enhance a skilled support staff to develop, enhance, and maintain GIS elements

Functions

  • Develop logical, activity based and service delivery driven development of MLFR GIS data, applications, systems and national coordination.
  •  Develop and maintain digital databases.
  • Administer the core MLFR GIS databases.
  • Administer the core components that provide access to the MLFR GIS databases.
  • Manage the coordination of GIS activity across MLFR departments.
  • Support maintenance of core geographic data by MLFR departments.
  • Develop and maintain technical standards for GIS data.
