MISSION STATEMENT

The Department of soil and water conservation is mandated to provide technical guidance to land users in order to conserve water and reclaim the degraded land base, realize production potential by planning and establishing recommended land management practices through structural and biological measures.

KEY GOALS
There are two key goals

• To reduce the amount of soil eroding by 20% from 40 to 32 tonnes per hectare per annum in catchment areas(50,000 hectares) by 2012
• To increase harnessing and conservation of water for development projects by communities from less than 10% to 15% by 2012

OBJECTIVES:

• Facilitate conservation of arable land within and outside catchment areas, in order to curb accelerated soil erosion.
• Advocate the adoption of watershed management approach in order to encourage integrated planning of development activities.
• Undertake soil investigations and classification in order to establish the various land use suitability ratings.
• Facilitate the reclamation of degraded lands in order to bring them to productive use.
• Promote water harvesting programmes.
• Assess and harness water resources available and construct infrastructure for needed water for irrigation, livestock, projects development and domestic use.
• Promotes social being to rural communities during implementation of catchment management activities.
•  Promote sustainable use of natural resources (soil and water).
• Mitigate effects of land degradation and desertification.
